How to Train with Your Checklist

Your trainer should be a person with lots of energy and patience because let’s face it, training involves a lot of repetitive work. But often store owners don’t want to train every employee every time, so they put the new hire with someone more experienced and tell them to train the new hire. So what do they train? How to answer the phone, count the drawer, find the bathroom and identify the jerks in the store. Meanwhile mastering sales techniques, learning the regulars’ names and knowing the finer points of making a relationship are all out the window. You are left with a haphazard program of dregs training dregs.

The important thing to

learn from all of these

examples is to break

down into manageable

bite-sized pieces all of

the information you are

carrying around in your

head. Start with things

that are most critical or

basic to your business.

If you are a blind store,

have them learn how to

measure a window from

day one and repeat each

day. If you are a coffee

house, have them learn

how to keep the place

spotless. Make sure that

all information can be

easily learned and tested.

If you start out to

teach them everything

you know without a

checklist, you’ll be

spinning your wheels.
